YUKON, Okla. —
Hackers got their hands on everything from social security numbers to bank account details for more than 1,000 school employees in Yukon.
How did it happen?
A member of the HR department opened an email she thought was from the superintendent, and responded to a request to send the “Superintendent” all the W2 information for all Yukon Public School employees.
Who are affected?
Officials said 1,300 employees are affected, including custodians, teachers and the superintendent himself.
What information was compromised?
• Social Security numbers.
• Wage information.
How is the school district handling the situation?
Officials with the district said they notified employees and authorities.
“Once we contacted the IRS, the FBI and our local police force, they were all quite certain that generally around this time of year, they do this to file fake tax reports,” Yukon Superintendent, Dr. Jason Simeroth, said.
Employees were given a notice about the data breach, which includes phone numbers to the IRS and the three credit bureaus.
